Know your rights if you face felony charges

In Georgia, 23 people have been indicted on charges for various crimes across the state. A federal grand jury indicted these individuals on Nov. 26, many of which were for drug-related charges.

Some people facing penalties include a 44-year-old man who has been charged with 19 counts of distributing a controlled substance, a 26-year-old woman who is charged with possessing methamphetamine and intending to distribute it, a 24-year-old man accused of intending to distribute methamphetamine and a 39-year-old man who is charged with distributing meth.

In each of these cases, as well as others, the individuals face federal charges. Federal drug charges usually come with a minimum of a one-year jail sentence, heavy fines and other penalties.

What should you do if you're accused of a federal offense?

A federal offense is one of the most significant you can be charged with, and depending on the class of the felony, you could face years or even decades behind bars. It is important to protect yourself and your freedoms immediately. It is your right to speak with your attorney and to make sure you understand the charges against you.

When you're accused of a crime, you should stay quiet and choose your words carefully. You should not say or do anything that might be used against you to convict you on drug-related charges.
